Sydney Tax Guide

What Sydney Workers Need to Know at Tax Time

Work-Related Deductions for Sydney Workers

Sydney workers have some of Australia's highest commuting costs, CBD parking fees, and professional expenses. These are all legitimate deductions if directly related to earning your income.

  • Sydney CBD parking (work-related, not commuting)
  • Toll costs for work travel (e.g. M5, M7, Cross City Tunnel)
  • Professional memberships and licences
  • Work uniforms, PPE, and protective equipment
  • Home office expenses (67¢/hour fixed rate or actual cost)
  • Work phone and internet (portion used for work)
  • Self-education directly related to current employment
  • Union fees and professional association subscriptions

Sydney Rental Property Owners

Sydney's property market means rental property tax is complex but also highly deductible. Interest on investment loans, property management fees, council rates, water, insurance, repairs, and depreciation on fixtures all reduce your taxable income.

NSW Payroll Tax Threshold 2024–25

NSW payroll tax applies when your Australian-wide wages exceed $1.2 million per year. The NSW rate is 5.45%. If you're approaching this threshold, we can structure your payroll to ensure compliance and minimise liability.

Sydney Construction & Tradie Tax

Construction workers across Western Sydney, Wollongong and the Greater Metro area can claim tools and equipment (up to $300 immediately, higher amounts depreciated), laundry for uniforms, and travel between job sites — not home to work.

🏙️ Did You Know — Sydney?

Sydney has the highest proportion of gig economy workers in Australia — and they face unique GST obligations. If you drive for Uber or deliver food in Sydney, you likely need to lodge a BAS every quarter regardless of how much you earn. We handle this for thousands of Sydney gig workers every year.

Sydney Tax FAQ

Sydney Tax Return Questions Answered

No. Everything is handled online at taxo.au. You simply create a free account, upload your documents or answer our questions, and we take care of the rest. We serve clients across all of Sydney — CBD to Western Sydney to Wollongong — without any office visit required.
You can claim CBD parking costs if they are for work-related travel — for example, driving to a client meeting or between work sites. You cannot claim parking at your normal workplace (it's considered a private commuting expense). We assess your specific situation to maximise what's claimable.
All Sydney Uber and ride-share drivers must register for GST from the first dollar earned and lodge quarterly BAS returns. You can deduct vehicle running costs (fuel, rego, insurance, depreciation), tolls paid on duty, phone costs (work portion), and Uber's service fee. We calculate whether the logbook or cents-per-km method gives you a larger deduction.
Sydney rental property owners can deduct interest on the investment loan, property management fees, council rates, water rates, landlord insurance, advertising, repairs and maintenance, depreciation on fittings (via a quantity surveyor report), and travel to inspect the property. Negative gearing losses reduce your taxable income from other sources.
31 October is the self-lodgement deadline. If you use a registered tax agent (like Taxo Advisory), you may qualify for a lodgement extension to May the following year. Contact us before 31 October to be registered as a client and access the extended deadline.
Using the ATO's revised fixed rate method (from 1 July 2022), you can claim 67 cents for every hour you work from home. This covers electricity, internet, stationery and minor equipment. You must keep a record of actual hours worked from home (e.g. diary, timesheets, or employer records). Alternatively, the actual cost method may yield more for full-time WFH workers.
