Gig Economy Tax Rules — What You Must Know
GST Rules: Ride-Share vs Food Delivery
The GST rules differ depending on what type of gig work you do.
- Ride-share (Uber, DiDi, Ola): Must register for GST from the first dollar — no $75,000 threshold.
- Food delivery (DoorDash, Deliveroo, Menulog): Must register only when annual turnover exceeds $75,000.
- Both ride-share and delivery: The ride-share rule applies — register for GST regardless of delivery income.
Vehicle Deductions — Logbook vs Cents Per Km
Your vehicle is typically your largest deduction as a gig worker. We calculate both methods and apply whichever gives the larger deduction:
- Cents per km: 88 cents per km in 2024–25, up to 5,000 km, no logbook required.
- Logbook method: Actual percentage of all vehicle costs based on a 12-week logbook. Best for high-km, high-cost vehicles.
Other Gig Worker Deductions
- Phone costs — work portion based on usage records
- Insulated delivery bags, phone mounts, high-vis vests
- Platform service fees deducted by the app
- Tolls paid while on a gig job
- Bicycle costs for cyclist riders (depreciation, maintenance, lock)
Multiple Platform Income — One Return
Many gig workers earn from 2–4 platforms simultaneously. We reconcile every income source, match expenses appropriately, and produce a single accurate return.
